As a huge advocate of friluftsliv (the Nordic concept of ‘open air living’), as well as experiencing three long months of extremely warm weather, this summer has been all about hosting at home. From catching up with friends over a cup of coffee, the mayhem of midweek suppers, to cosy weekends spent with those I love most, daily life has very much revolved around our new &Tradition Thorvald Garden Dining Set from Holloways of Ludlow.

Conveniently sold as a curated package by the family run British retailer to help you make the most of your space, the Thorvald has been a firm favourite of mine since it was originally launched by Danish design brand &Tradition two years ago.
Described by its designers, multi-disciplinary studio Space Copenhagen, as “an invitation to enjoy a pause, conversation, drink, or a meal under the open sky”, every softly rounded frame and sophisticated graphic detail of the fifteen-piece collection balance form and functionality beautifully.

Durable, stackable and extremely comfortable too, the solid table and four warm black powder-coated steel chairs have, since their arrival brought a distinctly Danish sensibility to our urban oasis. Giving the patio in particular the flexibility and longevity we needed to not only enjoy it now, but throughout the changing seasons ahead.
So, if like me you love hosting at home at any time of year, I’ve compiled some of my top tips and favourite finds from across the Holloways of Ludlow website, to help you create a friluftsliv-inspired garden and make the most of your time outdoors:

My top tips for hosting at home:
- Set the scene
By having a loose overall theme in mind when you begin will help you to tie everything together and create a cohesive setting everyone will love. - Add a focal point
Give height and a point of interest to your table by adding raised bowls of fruit and snacks alongside vases filled with fresh flowers. - Mix and match
Always mix and match different coloured plates, bowls and platters, as well as new pieces and vintage finds together for a more relaxed feel. - Make it cosy
Create a sense of intimacy with beautiful napkins, portable lamps and lots of cosy candlelight. - Finishing touches
Don’t forget a portable speaker for playing music and plenty of blankets draped over chairs for when the food is finished.
