Having written for Oslo-based brand Northern for several years it seemed only fitting to mark their twentieth anniversary by taking a closer look at the design that started it all, the Snowball Lamp.
Designed by award-winning gourmet chef, Trond Svendgård, who along with CEO Ove Rogne and two other close friends founded Northern Lighting back in 2005, the Snowball set the company’s stylish Nordic tone from the start.
With an ethos built on designing objects that shape space and the lives lived within them, this timeless luminaire, with its clean Bauhaus inspired silhouette and mouth blown opal glass shade quickly found its place in homes not just across Norway, but throughout Europe and beyond.
Evolving over the years, just like the company itself who in 2017 added furniture and lifestyle objects to their growing lighting collection, the Snowball has gone on to become not one but a series of products, which now includes a floor lamp and a carefully curated set of sister table lamps in colourways that always stayed true to the original.
Two decades on, and proving just as popular as ever, the Snowball Lamp is back. Reimagined for 2025 in a new, portable format, it, along with the rest of Northern’s latest releases were launched publicly at this year’s Designers’ Saturday; with I amongst many visitors across the three-day event super excited to see how this modern day classic had been tailored to suit how we live now.
Made with flexibility and intimacy in mind, this current interpretation of both the table and floor lamp are suitable for both indoor and outdoor spaces. Slightly smaller than the original, they both come in either a powder-coated stainless-steel grey-beige or PVD-plated brass finish.
Coming too with a discrete 3-step touch dimmer on the base, both products also provide up to eight hours of ambient illumination when on full power, making them the ideal addition to any home as the days grow darker.
Whether you’re looking to create a cosy morning coffee or a calm evening staying in, the Snowball Lamp is sure to make it all the more enjoyable. After all, it is turning ordinary moments like these into something meaningful that really deserves to be celebrated.
