As the calendar finally flips to February, my inbox instantly starts to ‘ping’ with a plethora of new season launches. And, after a tough start to the year, their arrival has been just the dopamine hit I needed.
So, if you’re also a Scandiphile on the lookout for fresh design inspiration this spring then the latest collection from &Tradition is a great place to start.
Focussed on telling stories rooted in originality, &Tradition once again blends timeless re-issues with the unique and innovative.
Featuring newly created furniture, lighting and objects from the likes of Anderssen & Voll, Space Copenhagen and Jaime Hayon, along with an array of archive pieces from Hvidt & Mølgaard, Verner Panton, and Viggo Boesen it’s hard to choose a favourite.
Here’s more about some of my highlights:
AX Lounge Chair by Hvidt & Mølgaard
Call it serendipity but I was only looking at original AX lounge chairs on Vinterior last week. A mid-century classic in every sense of the word, this 1950 design by the renowned Peter Hvidt and Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen was certainly ahead of its time.
Combining the construction of classic furniture with pioneering industrial techniques, the AX chair perfectly reflects the mindset of the era, that functional modern design should be attainable for everyone.
Made from solid wood and wood veneer that is form pressed and turned on a lathe, this beautiful reissue from &Tradition is available in ‘Lacquered Oak and Walnut’ or ‘Dark Stained Oak and Walnut’.
Montera Table Lamp by Jaime Hayon
Celebrated Spanish artist and designer Jaime Hayon was the talk of last year’s 3 Days of Design festival, and I for one loved the exhibition and the pieces he created for &Tradition last summer.
This season however his ever-growing collection of modern classics is joined by the Montera Table Lamp. Paying homage to his Mediterranean homeland, its name and striking silhouette are derived from the bullfighting hat worn by a Matador.
Available in two distinctive finishes, ‘Forest and Sky’ and ‘Amber and Ruby’ the generously proportioned light source is sure to fill any space with the glow of warm sunshine.
Wire Stool by Verner Panton
A hidden gem from the Verner Panton archives the Wire Stool captured my heart in an instant with its simple geometric shape, repeated patterns and polished stainless-steel finish.
Originally created in 1981, but destined to become a collector’s item for sure, this incredible piece is now at the top of my wish-list.
Suitable for use inside or outdoors, as extra seating, a side table or plant stand, each stackable Wire Stool also comes with an optional round seat pad which is upholstered in four luxurious colours and attached with a discreet magnet.
Thorvald collection by Space Copenhagen
While sitting out in the garden may feel like a while off yet the Thorvald collection of outdoor furniture by Space Copenhagen has got me wishing the months away.
Like many &Tradition fans I spent last season dreaming of their Trace cabinet, and while at the moment I may only be the proud owner of a Como portable lamp, I know it would look incredible perfectly perched on top of one of new café tables.
Taking the work of Copenhagen’s renowned neo-classical artist Bertel Thorvaldsen as its starting point, the entire collection, which is available in a ‘Warm Black’, ‘Bronze Green’ or ‘Ivory’ finish celebrates his mastery of form as well as the must-visit museum housing his extraordinary sculptures.
