I don’t think people realise that working as a freelance writer means that while those around me are counting down to their summer holidays, I’m busily beavering away on Christmas magazine issues and autumn-winter launches.
So to get my roundup of the AW23 season underway it had to be a collection I’m beyond excited about, one I’ve had the honour of being part of, ‘Everyday Matters’ from Norwegian brand Northern.
Designed to inspire and improve daily life, these carefully curated pieces are made with modern living in mind, and whether used in a private home, public space, or place of business they will allow you to create somewhere that’s distinctly your own.
I obviously adore every item, especially after seeing them develop from prototypes through to finished products, but want to tell you more about some of my favourites:
Furniture
First up is the Gem Lounge Chair and Pouf, designed by Cologne-based Meike Harde to accompany last year’s stunning sofa. Given the same inviting expression as their older sibling, both pieces are crafted to the highest quality and are perfect for lounging or entertaining, depending on the occasion.
The Cling Coffee Table meanwhile from trained cabinetmaker and designer Anton Björsing is a winning combination of the traditional and the contemporary. Available in two sizes, as well as a smoked oak or light oiled oak finish, this flat-packed piece is at the top of my wish list.
Another new addition I wish I had both the money and the space for is the Hi-Five Glass Cabinet from Rudi Wulff. Providing the perfect storage solution the sophisticated sliding glass doors, with their subtle bronze tint, allows you to hint at what’s inside without giving too much away.
Lighting
Alongside Morten & Jonas’s bold Kin Table Lamp with it’s Emperador marble base and mouth-blown glass shade, Northern have this season collaborated for the first time with Studio Sløyd.
A new Norwegian design duo you definitely need to know about, their Archive Table Lamp may be minimal in appearance, but it provides maximum presence, and what began life as a series of paper models created during Designers’ Saturday, Oslo’s largest and most important national design event, has now been beautifully replicated in a timeless steel.
Accessories
Created to complement or contrast depending on your personal style, the charming Echo Series of blankets and cushions from graphic artist Mariken Steen-Forgaard, are both super soft as well as visually striking thanks to being responsibly woven from high quality Merino and New Zealand wool.
While the Into Vase, again by Morten & Jonas, is a truly modern and multi-functional home accessory. Known for their experimental take on traditional Nordic style as well as their exciting use of contemporary colour, this must-have piece effortlessly transforms from a flower vase into a tray allowing you to display all those smaller items that matter most.
