With a wintery feel still in the air this week what better place to warm up than at the Fjället Cabin and its newly designed kitchen by Nordiska Kök.
Nestled in the breathtaking landscape of Ottsjö in northern Sweden, and owned by photographer Sophie Odelberg and her fiancé Gustav, this inspirational young couple have taken their deep appreciation for the great outdoors and created a dream home in which to enjoy it.
Carefully crafted to harmonise with its surroundings, as well as to celebrate the natural elements that define it, this contemporary yet cosy property is in fact the first architectural project to be completed by Stockholm-based design studio Note, who incidentally showed off this achievement at last week’s fair.
Consisting of three identical volumes, which are all placed offset to capture both the stunning views and to maximise the Nordic light, the Fjället Cabin follows the undulating terrain on which it sits. Each section then also serves a distinct function, cleverly linked together by a central walkway, ensuring a seamless flow from the sociable areas in the middle to the more private spaces that sit at either end.
With materiality playing such a crucial role in the identity of this house, the unique kitchen then designed for its interior by the award-winning team at Nordiska Kök, needed to complement completely the overarching architectural vision.
Taking the untreated Norrland pine walls, sourced from a forest only 140 kilometres away as its backdrop, the warm oak cabinets with their rounded handles, and stone countertops, ensure sustainability has remained a guiding principle even down to the smallest of details.
Featuring many thoughtful space-saving design solutions too, this striking kitchen also has a built-in pocket door cabinet which houses the integrated refrigerator, a bespoke shelf constructed within the kitchen wall itself to serve as a handy “service hatch” into the adjoining living room, and a light-reflecting ribbed glass display cabinet which is filled with a selection of beautiful hand-made ceramics.
Designed specifically for the Fjället Cabin, but now available for others to purchase too, this quality kitchen from Nordiska Kök perfectly combines what I love most, modern Scandinavian simplicity with traditional rustic charm.
