Whether it’s an iconic lamp, an innovative chair or the very latest in audio technology; what I love about Danish design is how pieces from the past sit happily alongside their current day counterparts.
This is because good design transcends time, it never goes out of style and it doesn’t slavishly follow trends.
It’s these enduring principles, along with quality craftsmanship of course, that mean Danish interior brands and furniture makers have continued to excite people across the world for over half a century.
Rediscovery and reinterpretation
As a result of designs from Denmark’s ‘Golden Age’ continuing to be popular a number of new pieces have been launched in recent years.
One company, who has successfully rediscovered and reinterpreted work by some of the country’s most iconic designers, is Georg Jensen Damask.
With the upmost respect for history and Danish traditions, Georg Jensen Damask was founded back in 1756 and combines over 250 years of weaving expertise with a modern approach to design.
They continue to collaborate with a range of leading names, including Older Paris and Andreas Engesvik, to produce an exciting range of textiles. Their flagship store in Copenhagen is always a treat to visit too.
Lost motifs and bold prints
Produced in cooperation with his grandson, the Georg Jensen Damask ‘Arne Jacobsen Collection’ includes the refined ‘Ypsilon’ bed linen as well as a range of bold graphic print tablecloths, tea towels and place mats.
Launched to mark the centenary of his birth, the lost motifs, which date from the 1950s, were selected from surviving sketches and have been used to create beautiful, as well as stylish, products perfectly suited for modern day homes.
Feel rested and rejuvenated
Available in a delicate grey or a deep navy blue colour for Autumn Winter 2019, the ‘Ypsilion’ bed linen is made from 100% combed Egyptian cotton, so it feels super soft and weighty; just what you need at this time of year.
As a terrible sleeper, and someone who shares her bed nightly with a toddler, as well as the cat, having the most amazing bed linen is pure luxury. I may not get the recommended nine hours, but at least I can feel rested and rejuvenated when the alarm goes off.
‘Ypsilon’ is also available in baby and junior sizes too, just let Georg Jensen Damask know the dimensions and they will make a set especially for your little one, how amazing is that!
Meanwhile the range of table linens and towels are super durable as well as practical, making them perfect for everyday use. They come in a range of grey shades, dusty blue and green, as well as a classic white.
Celebrating a design legacy
There is no doubt that with elegant, timeless pieces such as these, the ‘Arne Jacobsen Collection’ from Georg Jensen Damask will continue to celebrate the design legacy of such a remarkably talented man for many more years to come.
