As with every January, you can’t pick up an interiors magazine or click on a website at the moment without being inundated with trend forecasts. From what paint colour to choose, to which cushions to throw on your sofa, the pressure to fill your home with what’s ‘in’ rather than what’s ‘not’ is relentless.
And while I’m not averse to some ‘new year new energy’, (let’s be honest we’re all going to need some to get through the next twelve months), when it comes to investing in home improvements, especially expensive ones, I’d much prefer to look at these things for what they really are, inspiration.
One room in particular where this kind of thinking applies more than most has to be the kitchen, and why, when it comes to planning my own project, I’ve turned to Danish brand Garde Hvalsøe to take a closer look at my favourite kitchen ideas for 2025.
Founded in early nineties Copenhagen, and run by trained cabinetmakers, Søren Hvalsøe Garde and Søren Lundh Aagaard, Garde Hvalsøe has as you’d expect built a reputation on quality and craftsmanship; so no matter what kitchen you choose now, you can be sure it will stand the test of time.
1. Colour
Whether you prefer soft and subtle or bold and bright there are so many ways to use colour in the kitchen. And while I’m personally not ready to fully colour drench the walls and ceiling just yet, by incorporating a richly toned marble worktop, a pop of pink in the pantry, or a rustic red splashback it will instantly elevate the overall effect as well as make your space feel more personal and inviting.
2. Chrome
This much-loved metallic is back in a big way and has been steadily creeping its way into my home for the past twelve months. The perfect partner to natural materials such as wood or stone, sleek stainless steel and industrial zinc, whether incorporated through cabinetry, worktops, handles or sinks creates a striking result in any domestic space, and let’s be honest, it’s always guaranteed to match your appliances too.
3. Contrast
Just like with our food, playing with unexpected contrasts within your kitchen will give a traditional space a more contemporary feel. By authentically combining natural finishes with manmade materials, such as the grain of wood against polished concrete, or a pale paint finish with a warm metallic, you’ll add interest and intrigue as well as create a long-lasting design everyone will love.
4. Curves
Circles and curves are already a recurring theme in my own home so I’m all for incorporating more gentle, rounded forms into my kitchen too. At present I have circular inset handles in my cupboards and drawers, but a smooth organically shaped cabinet or elegant freestanding kitchen island would really soften the space and improve that all important flow from our dining room.
5. Curate
Not everything has to be hidden away and if you’re looking for glass fronted cabinets or open shelving, Garde Hvalsøe have many incredible options. Just like in a professional kitchen they are ideal for maximising storage and keeping high-use items within easy reach, or when not in use curated thematic displays, such as matching jars or glassware or crockery collections provide the perfect paired-back but polished look.
