This year one of my favourite Danish designs celebrates its 20th anniversary; Royal Copenhagen’s Blue Fluted Mega.
When first introduced back in 2000, neither the legendary fine porcelain manufacturer, nor its creator Karen Kjældgård-Larsen, could have known that what started out as a student project would go on to take its place in design history.
While I may not have Danish heritage myself, and with it a family collection of beautiful Royal Copenhagen pieces to inherit, the items I have chosen to invest in myself over the last few years already hold so many special memories.
An instant success
It was while studying at the Danish School of Design, that Karen Kjældgård-Larsen first began reinterpreting Royal Copenhagen’s original patterns. Taking their Blue Fluted Plain design from 1775 as her inspiration, she enlarged and fragmented the familiar, hand-painted cobalt blue florals into a thoughtful series of exciting new sketches.
It was sometime later that these ideas where presented to Royal Copenhagen and Blue Fluted Mega was born.
Initially only six lunch plates where produced and displayed at their flagship store at Amagertorv, in Copenhagen; the same venue 200,000 visitors, including me, head to each year to enjoy the Christmas Tables exhibition.
Karen’s designs became an instant success and Blue Fluted Mega is now one the company’s biggest sellers. As a result, over the last two decades the collection has grown to more than a hundred different products.
New anniversary pieces
To mark this very special anniversary, along with Royal Copenhagen’s 245th birthday, Karen has once again played with these striking patterns to create a number of new pieces.
There is a breath-taking large centrepiece bowl, a cake-stand, which is available in two sizes, two hourglass shaped vases and dessert plates, as well as a lidded jug and coffee mug set, which has gone straight to the top of my own wish-list.
Everyday luxury to be enjoyed
Whether on its own, alongside other pieces of tableware, or mixed with materials such as slate and wood, Blue Fluted Mega gives both a nostalgic nod to the past while perfectly adding a touch of personal luxury to be enjoyed each and every day.
