I’ve always believed that no matter how old your home may be, or however long you may have lived there, it should be constantly evolving alongside the people within it.
This is certainly the case when it comes to the 1930s suburban semi my husband and I moved into almost a decade ago now. While from the outside it looks like any other house on the street, on the inside I’ve been sure to create a space that combines the needs of modern family life while still celebrating its original features from the past.
Thankfully this means our high ceilings, parquet floors and tiled fireplaces provide the perfect backdrop for the considered, well-crafted pieces of Nordic design I adore.
One such item that has recently fitted in seamlessly, both periodically and practically, is the 4006 Floor Lamp from Hadeland Glassverk.
Part of the Norwegian glassblowing studio’s ‘Archive Collection’, it was originally designed in 1932, by a team consisting of renowned names such as Jonas Hidle and Arnulf Bjørshol to illuminate the homes and businesses of Norway in an affordable and functional fashion.
Rediscovered and re-launched in 2019, these precious pendant, floor and table lights, with their minimal profiling and restrained detailing, are still made using the same traditional techniques.
Founded in 1762 Hadeland Glassverk is one of the world’s leading artisan glass manufacturers, and it is at their factory by the beautiful Randsfjord Lake, just an hour outside Oslo that the Archive Collection continues to be mouth-blown into wooden moulds before being finished by hand.
There are eight striking designs within the collection, available in brass, black and brushed steel; as well as a range of coloured glass finishes sympathetic to the original period almost a hundred years ago.
It truly is a joy to have such an iconic piece of Norwegian design in my home and one I know will be cherished for many years to come.
To find out more about the Archive Collection visit the Hadeland Glassverk website, alternatively see it in person at their new UK showroom within The Design Centre Chelsea Harbour, London.
