If there was ever a design collaboration that felt like a completely natural fit, it must be that of Danish wood manufacturer Dinesen and renowned British architect John Pawson.
An absolute hero of mine, it is almost three decades ago that a university friend gave me a copy of John’s now legendary ‘Minimalism’ book, and as fate would have it, it was around the same time he himself discovered Dinesen.
Founded in 1898, and today lead by another Hans Peter Dinesen, this family-run company has over five generations been guided by a faultless responsibility and respect for nature.
Still producing their sustainably managed Oak, Douglas, Ash and Pine flooring and wood products in the small town of Jels in South Jutland, as you would expect, the new Pawson Furniture Collection is a masterclass in timeless design, enduring materials and quality craftsmanship.
Created to celebrate their lasting partnership, and taking inspiration from their 30 year back catalogue, the beautiful new Pawson Furniture Collection is split into two parts.
Firstly, there is the ‘Dining Series’, which encompasses a dining table, bench, and stool, originally designed by John in 1992 for his own home in Notting Hill. And, while the pieces still honour the original look and feel, they have been discretely adjusted to meet more modern sensibilities thanks to a delicate combination of woods and a striking shadow gap that runs along the tabletop.
Complementing this is a bespoke ‘Lounge Collection’ too. Made from solid Douglas wood and covered in the customer’s choice of Kavadat textile, the lounge chair, lounge table, sofa, and daybed still carry John’s trademark pared back sensory style, but this time the pieces take their cue from the Danish word ‘Umage’, which means going beyond what is expected or considered possible.
A testament, if any was needed, to the continued progression that Dinesen and Pawson continue to bring to their work.
The Pawson Furniture Collection will be presented at this year’s 3daysofdesign, when the Dinesen showroom in Copenhagen will be transformed into an apartment designed by the architect and furnished with the new pieces.
