As someone who has quite a distinctive sense of style, sharing it with those I live with can at times be quite a struggle. Whoever you live with though, whether it’s housemates, partners, children or pets, we all want to create a home that feels right for everyone.
For my latest ‘At home with’, we head to the North Western part of America, to the city of Boise, Idaho, to take a look around the Nordic inspired home of Willow Maurice, aka Willow Style Co.
Willow proves that, even as a family of seven, everyday life can be lived in style.
Over to Willow to tell us more:
“As a busy Mom to five extremely energetic kids, as well as a self-taught interiors enthusiast, there is always lots going on at home.
We are currently in the process of building our dream house, so for now we are renting. We have lived here for just over a year, and as soon as I saw the large windows with so much natural light streaming though, I knew it would be perfect for us.
Of course, we are more limited in terms of what we can and cannot do with the space, but one thing I always do in a rental is change all of the lighting. New pendants over a kitchen island or above the master bed, make a world of difference. It’s such a simple change, super cost-effective, and makes a place really feel like your own.
My interior style has certainly become more defined as I’ve got older. I think you learn to listen and trust your own instincts more. I personally prefer clean lines and muted tones, so modern Nordic design suits me perfectly.
I carefully curate my furniture and value every piece as I try to buy less; but invest in better. For example, my new Covent Sofa from New Works means the world to me. I visited their showroom while in Copenhagen last year and had such a lovely chat with the designers, they even helped me make the arrangements to bring the sofa home to Idaho. They were beyond generous and the upholstery I chose, was custom made for me. I love the clean, straight back of it, the slight curvature to the arms and the understated size, as most sofas in the USA are massive and overwhelmingly large for my taste.
That said, our master bedroom is my favourite part of our home. For most people, the bedroom is the last room in the house to be styled and it somehow becomes the catch-all for the overflow pieces and extra furniture from other rooms in the house. But for us, I like to create a calm space to relax and retire to at night. A morning cup of coffee in bed doesn’t hurt either, especially when the rest of the family are still asleep.
For me, no matter how beautifully decorated a home is it is always about people, the laughter and love, that fills the walls and the memories that are made.”
