With this year’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show just a matter of days away, as well as another bank holiday coming up, my recent focus has been on getting our garden summer ready.
It’s one thing nurturing a sense of style when it comes to your home’s interior; but how do you successfully translate it outdoors?
I’ve mentioned before how our Nordic travels have also influenced the look and feel of our little urban oasis. Over the last five years my husband and I have spent more time than we’d like to admit poring over horticultural design books as well as working tirelessly, whatever the weather, to make our big dream a reality.
The expanse of gravel and sad looking bamboo we inherited from the previous owners are thankfully long gone. Instead there’s sharp tiered decking which has silvered beautifully in last summer’s sunshine as well as borders filled with soft traditional planting which is starting to mature nicely.
However, there remained one final investment to be made – garden furniture.
Instant impact
With our main seating area visible from the house we wanted to create a complementary outdoor room. Something we could use throughout the day, whether it’s for an alfresco breakfast, a quick cup of coffee or a relaxing evening meal.
As with all our home furnishings it is the understated designs we a drawn to, but with having wooden decking I knew early on that we needed to contrast this with a metal table and chairs. I also wanted something that would add instant impact, give the garden a focal point as well as last a lifetime of heavy use.
Timeless design
Let’s be honest good garden furniture isn’t cheap, but with its distinctive design as well as tough, practical qualities we finally opted for the iconic and super-stylish Fermob Luxembourg.
It was after speaking with Laurence White the owner of Treacle George, a leading Fermob dealer in the UK, that I knew we’d totally made the right decision.
Having worked for decades with design brands I love, such as Stelton, Carl Hansen and Sons as well as String and Louis Poulsen, Laurence knows great design when he sees it. He personally handpicks every item on his webshop or available to buy directly from his amazing 270-year-old terraced cottage store in Tetbury.
The legendary Luxembourg
Found in homes, hotels and iconic locations around the world, fabulous French firm Fermob have been manufacturing their innovative tables and chairs for the last one hundred years.
The legendary Luxembourg collection is one of their most popular and based on a design originally produced for use in the Jardin du Luxembourg and Jardin des Tuileries in 1923.
Made from powder coated aluminium which is rust resistant, the Luxembourg range is available in 24 unique colour options, I chose Anthracite. It also has a gorgeous sleek matt finish that’s easy to clean and maintain. The chairs are also stackable and have a curved seat for extra comfort.
All together there are over 20 different lounging and dining pieces available in this series, including the most recent addition, a completely restyled rocking chair.
For me this latest addition not only brings back very happy Parisian memories but also the opportunity to finally put my feet up and enjoy the garden we have lovingly created for so long. Now I just need some sunshine!
