With this year’s 3 Days of Design festival fast approaching Copenhagen is very much on my mind, and what better way to get inspirationally prepared than with the latest project from Nordiska Kök.
Located in the beautiful Frederiksstaden district, an area of the city known for its 18th century Rococo architecture, this recently renovated apartment has the Amalienborg Palace, the Marble Church and the Designmuseum Denmark right on its doorstep. Designed by architect Søren Lemche back in 1907, today’s lucky residents, Production Manager, Ditte Skyum Rares, her author husband, Rune Skyum-Nielsen along with their three young daughters, now not only get to enjoy the original four-metre-high ceilings, decorative plasterwork and herringbone parquet floors, but also a custom-made kitchen created with family life in mind.
Wanting to create a space that would bridge the gap between the past and the present, the couple first approached the award winning Nordiska Kök after seeing their designs on Pinterest. Opting for a classic Shaker style, but with a slimmer 40mm frame, both the cabinets and walls are all painted in the same sophisticated ‘Soft Cotton’ colour.
Allowing the beauty of the materials and architecture to speak for themselves, the worktop, splash back and kitchen island, have also all been crafted from a singular source; Calacatta Viola marble. Well known for its vivid veining and rich colour, this in turn has then been perfectly paired to the soft green of the ceiling, as well as the brass finishes found on the sink, door handles, and even the Audo Copenhagen Passage Bar stools placed alongside.
It’s in these finer design choices that I personally think this couple have truly excelled. For example, inside each of the light-coloured cabinets, the drawers have been finished in a contrasting dark oak to echo the tone of the parquet floor, their Audo Copenhagen Androgyne Lounge Table, found in the sitting room beyond is finished in the same marble, and the earthy greens and taupes found within it picked up once again in the fabrics used to upholster their &Tradition Fly Lounge Chair and Audo Copenhagen Offset sofa.
Filled with Scandinavian elegance as well as historical charm, this Copenhagen kitchen from Nordiska Kök is both cosy and impressive, and one I will certainly be returning to time and time again for ideas.
