In recent years, it has become quite the tradition for my family and I to head to Copenhagen over the festive holidays for some much-needed rest and relaxation.
These exciting few days are always filled with fun, as well as visits to some of our favourite places, and for me, that includes stopping by Royal Copenhagen’s flagship store to see their annual Christmas Table Exhibition.
Situated in one of the oldest buildings in the city, on the iconic Amagertorv, this beloved exhibition attracts more than 200,000 visitors.
Now in its 59th year, this year’s theme is “An Enchanted Christmas” and explores the dreams and thoughts of the six specially invited table decorators.
These famous and influential names include critically acclaimed writer of ‘Borgen’, Adam Price, who combines the classic Blue Fluted Plain porcelain he inherited from his grandmother with his personal passion for Greenland. Art historian and TV personality Bente Scavenius mixes Venetian finds from her travels to Italy with vintage Saxon Flower designs. While artist, cook and winner of ‘The Great Danish Bake Off’, Frederikke Legaard celebrates her love for Japan, using pieces from the contemporary Blomst range alongside her own hand-made creations.
Fashion designer Søren Le Schmidt has a more reflective approach to the holidays and takes visitors from Christmas stress to Christmas bliss. On one side of the room, glass, cutlery and furniture is scattered across the table, while on the other the calming HAV collection portrays a moment of hygge and togetherness.
The final scene, described as an “enchanted afterparty,” is a collaboration between set and production designer Mia Stensgaard and haute-couturière and costume designer Anja Vang Kragh. Together, using Royal Copenhagen’s pretty Flora collection, they have created a Christmas cabin which is staged as a compact living space where the refined rituals of Christmas meets lively reality of festive get togethers.
Filled to the brim with Christmas creativity and magic, I cannot wait to see the Royal Copenhagen Christmas Table exhibition for myself, and I will be sure to share more with you over on Instagram.
The Royal Copenhagen Christmas Table exhibition runs until 31st December and is located on Amagertorv 6 in Copenhagen.
