As you might expect, my recent trip to Copenhagen for 3 Days of Design is still very much at the forefront of my mind. Continuing to inspire both my written work for brands and publications, as well as the look and feel of my own home, this week I wanted to share more about something I noticed throughout, just how many British designers are collaborating with leading Danish names.
From Faye Toogood’s incredible pairing with Frama, John Pawson’s beautiful furniture range for Dinesen, through to &Traditions’ iconic Robin Day reissues, there were a whole host of launches across the festival that started life on this side of the North Sea.
So if, like me, you’re a Brit with a passion for Danish design, here’s more about some of pieces and people to be looking out for:
NEW WORKS: Coda Modular Sofa
Designed by British born, but Sweden based John Astbury, the Coda Modular Sofa, complete with its complimentary ottomans, are as you’d expect, effortlessly cool. Already working with the brand on their Atlas Series of tables, coffee tables and stools, this is New Works’ first foray into modular furniture.
Offering a staggering array of combinations and configurations to fit any space, with its clean lines and generous curves, for me Coda is the perfect pairing of elegant aesthetics and everyday comfort.
Muuto: Earnest Extendable Table
With a philosophy based around process and materials, and the natural beauty that emerges from a simple approach to both, London based product and furniture designer John Tree has created a timeless table that will become the heart of any home.
An exploration in oak, the Earnest Extendable Table for Muuto takes its shape and structure from this single material. Multifunctional too, designed for working at as well as eating at, the smaller size comfortably fits 6 seats, expanding to 10, while the larger version accommodates 8 and extends to 12.
Also, be sure to take a look at John’s lighting collaboration with HAY, as his Cupola Lamp will be launching this autumn too.
Fredericia: Jota Sofa
Acclaimed product and furniture designer Jasper Morrison certainly needs no introduction from me, and neither too does the family-owned design company Fredericia. Establish in 1911, this leading name in modern Danish design may have an archive packed full of enduring classics, but it was their new Jota Sofa that was catching everyone’s eye.
Combining heritage with contemporary production, practicality and paired-back style, every sofa is also meticulously crafted at the Fredericia workshop in Svendborg, Denmark.
Alongside this, Fredericia also showcased a new lounge chair by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby as an extension to their existing Plan Collection too.
TAKT: Bow Chair
Having already worked with TAKT on their Sling collection, for me the new Bow Chair by London-based studio Industrial Facility, was one of my stand-out pieces of this years 3 Days of Design.
Founded by Sam Hecht and Kim Colin, a designer and an architect respectively, their shared approach reflects both a thoughtful consideration of form and a unique understanding of contemporary life.
Moulded from a single piece of plywood oak, the seat of the Bow Chair is unusually wide in proportion to its depth, and the waterfall edge at the front softens contact with the body as you sit down.
Carl Hansen & Søn: The English Chair
Proving that even the greatest names in Danish design took inspiration from my native shores is the relaunched English Chair by Kaare Klint. First presented at the Cabinetmakers’ Autumn Exhibition in Copenhagen in 1931, it takes it ques from old English chairs dating back to the 18th century.
Although the design looks refined and pared back on first glance, the complexity of the craftsmanship is incredible, with its contrasting use of wood and French canework taking a skilful Carl Hansen & Søn weaver almost a week to complete.
With the 2025 dates for 3 Days of Design now announced, 4th-6th June, I’d recommend heading to the festival’s website to find out more.
