If you’re still on the lookout for the perfect Nordic inspired escape this summer, then the new Vipp Salaca River guesthouse could be the one. The ninth inspirational destination in the Danish brand’s growing portfolio of bookable accommodation, this former fisherman’s house is the perfect blend of Scandinavian minimalism and rustic charm.
Located in Latvia’s spectacular Salaca National Park, and just a 90-minute drive from Riga Airport, this listed log cabin has been on quite the journey itself. Dating back to 1876, and once used as a popular stop-off for travellers, it was due to be demolished until Artūrs Martinsons, founder of Latvian architecture and design practice Xcelsior, relocated it.
After numbering every log and stone, this enchanting riverbank retreat was then rebuilt and remodelled by Artūrs and Vipp’s in-house team. Now neatly nestled in an incredible 17 hectares of protected meadows and woodland, the Vipp Salaca River guesthouse can comfortably accommodate up to four adults over its two beautifully renovated floors.
Designed with modern life in mind, but still celebrating the original log cabin’s long history, what was once a rabbit warren of tiny rooms is now a light-filled open-plan space that takes full advantage of its setting.
On the ground floor, after dropping their coats, boots and bags in the entrance hall, guests are greeted as you might expect by Vipp’s iconic black powder-coated kitchen in one corner and a Cabin round table, complete with dark oak Cabin chairs in the other. There’s also a Chimney sofa to stretch out on, as well as a super cosy Lodge lounge chair placed next to a traditional stone fireplace.
There’s also on this level a whitewashed twin bedroom, complete with workspace and a large bathroom, brimming with Vipp accessories.
Upstairs meanwhile, hunkered under the original beams you’ll find a grand master bedroom, complete with a deep freestanding bathtub, that wouldn’t look out of place in the most luxurious resort.
Finally, outside there’s a number of dedicated areas to rest and relax in complete with Vipp outdoor furniture, a huge hammock slung in the trees and a separate terrace equipped with a sunken wood-fired hot tub, offering the perfect place to end the day and gaze out upon the blanket of stars overhead.
