If all the preparations are starting to get a little too much, or you’re longing to celebrate Christmas a bit differently this year, then the Nusfjord Village and Resort could be just the winter wonderland you’re looking for.
Nestled peacefully on a rugged corner of the Lofoten archipelago in Northern Norway, this enchanting fishing village provides its visitors with towering mountains and dramatic sea views, as well as an unforgettable festive experience.
Set around a historically preserved harbour, there are a whole host of beautifully designed and colourful cabins or ‘rorbu’ to stay in, as well as the recently restored ‘Væreierboligen,’ the former home of the fishing community owner Hans Dahl.
When holidaying at Nusfjord at this time of year, lucky guests can also choose their own Christmas tree, which is provided along with a selection of ornaments to make your home-away-from-home feel extra magical.
With a Christmas market open from the second week of December too, there is an abundance of local artists and craftspeople to discover, as well as unique gifts to buy at the Salteriet gallery, before sampling locally produced food and drink while warming up around the crackling open fire pits.
Unsurprisingly incredible cuisine takes centre stage at Nusfjord all year round, with several restaurants, cafes and taverns dotted throughout the village and along the waterfront. From the intimate Restaurant Karoline, offering traditional Nordic fare by esteemed chefs, the much-loved pizza serving Oriana Tavern, to the Landhandleriet Café which is housed in the old general store, there’s definitely something to suit every palette and every mealtime.
Despite the limited daylight at this time of year, during a stay at Nusfjord there’s no excuse to fully immerse yourself in an array of exciting activities on offer. These include a guided journey beneath the Arctic sky to witness the mesmerising Northern Lights, an exhilarating sea eagle safari, or a hike along the historic trails through the nearby forests, to the local lakes, and up the surrounding mountains.
And, after a day of exploring the rugged, wintry outdoors, you can always unwind at the spa, which was recently built by graduates from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design. Featuring a luxurious sauna, outdoor shower and ‘stamp’, a traditional wood-fired Norwegian hot tub, it’s the perfect blend of relaxation and indulgence. Plus, if you’re feeling brave enough you can even take a daring plunge into the icy waters of the fjord.
With just 20 full-time residents, the Nusfjord Village and Resort has to be the ultimate Nordic getaway, and in my opinion the perfect place to recharge after another busy year.
Prices start at NOK 2,995 for a standard harbour cabin.
